Introduction

Words that were once used in everyday language can now be found offensive. This is partly due to more understanding and sensitivity about language and the roots of certain expressions, and partly due to a more thorough understanding of the need to operate in a way that does not cause offence.

However, this can cause difficulties because some people are not aware that certain language or expressions are unacceptable, and also because some people can be very sensitive. It can also cause problems with people using expressions that they know are unacceptable, and they do this deliberately to cause hurt or to get a reaction.

The use of unacceptable language can lead to a claim of harassment. Since October 2024, employers have been required to take reasonable steps to stop harassment of a sexual nature occurring in the workplace.

What is, and is not, acceptable in the workplace? To what extent is the employer responsible for making sure that employees are aware of acceptable and unacceptable language? What is neutral language? These are the questions that will be explored in this webinar.
