Introduction

Advocacy in the Magistrates Court continues to challenge prosecutors, especially those faced with half a dozen trials to deal with in a day.

Such scenarios require an ability to quickly assimilate the facts and law in order to present an effective opening to the court. Whilst there is no 'one size fits all’ for trials, the experienced advocate will quickly be able to adopt a case theory and pick and choose tactics to deploy and present an effective case.

This live broadcast session will tackle what to say in an opening and closing speech and how not to repeat yourself. It will also deal with how to effectively cross-examine the defendant especially where evidence in chief might last 20 seconds and consist of adopting the account presented in interview.

What You Will Learn

This interactive course will cover the following:

  • What to include in your opening speech
  • How to distinguish what you say in closing
  • How to get the pitch and tone right
  • Cross-examination of defendants
  • How to deal with adverse inferences
  • How to deal with lies
  • How to deal with inconsistencies

Recording of live sessions: Soon after the Learn Live session has taken place you will be able to go back and access the recording - should you wish to revisit the material discussed.
